the fourth of july

Earlier this month we took the kids canoeing and camping on the the Elk River and Big Sugar Creek, introducing them to the cool, clear, rocky rivers of my childhood memories. We went there several times every summer when I was small in a cute little pop-up camper. The rain plink-plunking on that camper roof is, to this day, one of the sweetest things I've ever known. My kids sleep in tents (J has his own now) but the floating, crawdads, minnows and oh-so-much swimming are just exactly the same as they always were.
